Arturo Sandoval is one of the top-two trumpet virtuosos of all time. There isn't anything he can't do on the trumpet. The knock on him is that he expects that same level of performance from fellow musicians, and comes down on them hard when they don't measure up. This may be, but in my experience, he's wonderful to his fans. I had tickets to see Arturo and his band play in upstate New York on September 14, 2001. That concert was postponed after the events of the 11th. I happened to be in New York that week to see my parents, so when Arturo arrived for the rescheduled concert several months later, I was back home in Wisconsin. My mom just happened to have a business meeting at the concert hall the same day as the concert, but she couldn't stay for the show. She mentioned that we had tickets to the original date, and that I lived in Wisconsin and was a huge fan. She must have mentioned my name, because a week later I received a signed copy of the concert program and a copy of the For Love or Country cd. Arturo had inscribed a personal message to me on the cd cover; it is a reminder to me of the terrible events of that week, but also of the true depth of human kindness that is too often easy to overlook in people.
