When I was in college, I had the great honor of being Jon Faddis' driver for the
weekend of the annual jazz festival. I learned a lot about him that weekend; he has a dry wit that is often
misinterpreted, he likes mystery novels, and he thought the movie Return to Me was "pretty good."
He's a guy who hates to be asked how high he can play, and if you really want to talk trumpet,
beware, he will psychoanalyze everything you say. Other than that, he's just a regular, mildly eccentric guy
who happens to be one of the best trumpet players on the planet. He was really great with the students; I
took him to a house party, he brought salsa (100% natural), and everyone had a blast. It was a wonderful experience
I will always remember.
The first clip here, Why Not?, is off the Camel Lips LP. Keep in mind when you
listen to it that that's a seventeen-year-old playing Dizzy licks and double-C's!
