My first screamin' experience came in September of 1990. I had just seen Wynton live, and was so uninspired I thought about quitting the trumpet. A couple weeks later Maynard Ferguson came to town. My band director described him as, "An old white guy that plays high notes." So I went, and I was totally blown away. Maynard was really "on" that night - nailing double-C's throughout and finishing it off by drilling the double-F at the end of Hey Jude. That concert changed my life.

As much as I love listening to the other guys featured on this site, Maynard will always be number one for me. More than anything, this site is a tribute to him, and a celebration of his music and influence which has enriched the lives of so many.

Maynard passed away on August 23rd, 2006. Jazz and trumpet playing will never be the same.

The music lives on.
